This Sampson lived in or near to Ellastone in Staffordshire. His parents are thought to have been Sampson and Ann PARKS. Sampson senior mentioned a wife Ann and a son Sampson in his will probated in 1684.
He is thought to have married at least 6 times. It's thought that these wives were:
- Ann HAMBLETON (-1688) in 1680 ("Sampson Parkes of Mathesfield & An[n] Hambleton of Ilam") by licence
- Ann GARRETT (-1697/1698) in 1697/98. By licence. ("Samson Parks of 'Waste' in the parish of Ellaston, widower and Ann Garrett, widow").
- Dorothy BRADSHAW (-1699/00) in May 1698 in "Carswell" by licence. ("Sampson Park sof the parish of Ellison, aged 50 widower and Dorothea Bradshaw of Chedetton, single aged about 30") . They had an unnamed son who died aged 3 months.
- Alice POYNTON in 1700 ("Samson Parks of the p[ar]ish of Ellaston in the County of Stafford and M[istress] Alice Poynton of the p[ar]ish of Roc[e]ster")
- Mary CLOOSE (-1708) in 1701 ("Sampson Parks of Allaston husbandman was married to Mary Cloose of [Alstonefield] ") by licence
- Elizabeth PARKS in 1714. ("Sampson Parks of Ellaston in Stafford, Elizabeth Parks of Waterford"). It seems that both parents brought a son William to the marriage, as unfortunately both died within weeks of each other in 1722.
All of the above marriages were by licence, which suggested that there was some issue with Sampson marrying Ann HAMBLETON. Were one or both of them underage, or widowed? Or was it simply because Ilam is in Staffordshire and Mathesfield (now Mayfield, Derbyshire) were in different Counties.
This Sampsons's birth date might be estimated:
- 1648 - based on his recorded approximate age when married to Dorothy BRADSHAW
- 1655 - based on him being an estimated 25 when first (known to be) married in 1680
- 1661 - based on his recorded approximate age when married to Mary CLOOSE
The most likely burial for this Sampson was in November 1746. If so, he lived to ~90 years old, which is similar at least one of the other Sampson PARK(E)S.
