John HINDLE was a weaver originally from Mellor.
He married Mary SHARPLES at St Mary-the-Virgin in November 1723 and their christened at least 4 children. They initially lived in Osbaldeston, according to his daughter Ann's baptismal record, but by the christening of daughter Jennett in 1733 they were living in Clayton[-le-Dale] which matches with his daughter Ann's marriage record of 1747.
There were a few further christenings of children (Betty 1745, Nathaniel 1748, Betty 1750) by a John and Mary HINDLE of Pleasington which have been ignored as Ann HINDLE's marriage of 1747 suggests that the family were still in Clayton-le-Dale for the Betty 1745 christening. There is also a John 1750 christened by a John and Mary HINDLE of Blackburn, but seems too late. Also a John HINDLE of Billington was baptizing children during this period.
Potential baptismal records for John HINDLE include:
- 23 Feb 1695 St Mary-the-Virgin, Blackburn by Alexander of Livesay
- 24 Jan 1697 Great Harwood by William
- Sep 1698 St Mary-the-Virgin, Blackburn by John, husbandman
- 5 Nov 1703 St Mary-the-Virgin, Blackburn by Charles and Betty, Rishton
- 3 Dec 1704 Great Harwood by Henry
There are several wills for John HINDLEs in/around Blackburn between 1746 and 1800, none of which are a great fit, including:
- 1746 Blackburn (John Hindle the Younger), chapman
- 1760 Great Harwood, tanner
- 1771 Blackburn, yeoman
- 1772 Rishton, yeoman
- 1775 Oswaldtwistle, yeoman
- 1776 Blackburn, manufacturer
- 1780 Ramsgreave, yeoman
